Top 7 Changes for the Dallas Mavericks to Defend Title by Joel C. Cordes The Dallas Mavericks need to wake up and make some changes if they hope to defend their NBA title. 2011's championship squad was truly lighting in a bottle. Can they hope that the perfect storm will strike twice? Sure, they won 57 games last year, but it wasn't until the playoffs began that Dallas became a chemistry juggernaut. They suddenly became defensively tough, supremely confident and insanely clutch, especially from downtown. Despite losing stoppers like Tyson Chandler and Deshawn Stevenson, this year's Mavs have actually been BETTER on defense, inching from 10th to sixth in total points allowed. But this team has noticeably nosedived on offense, dropping from 11th to 19th in total points scored and 11th to 21st from outside. More damaging though? They currently don't have the lock-tight chemistry that was on display in 2011. Nagging injuries have kept the roster constantly off balance, while Lamar Odom has been unable (unwilling?) to fit alongside Dirk Nowitzki. Jason Terry must start knocking down clutch shots again, Dirk has to start living in mid-post once more and the Mavericks must find a greater sense of urgency. Last year's inspiring title run didn't just happen as a random series of events. This squad must rally around each other AND HOPE that lightning strikes twice. At least with Lamar gone they can breathe again. To me all his moping around felt like a dark cloud and now the sun is back out shining. Now they just need to get things together and make it into the playoffs.

I've checked the nba standings this morning and noticed that the Mavs are listed as #6 in the Western conference, which I found a little concerning - considering that the Rockets, Nuggets and Jazz (the Suns too) are right behind the Mavs... It's gotten a little TOO exciting for my taste... I think it was the right decision to remove Lamar Odom from the roster. Somehow he didn't manage to find his spot on the team... So I hope they can stay focused now, and as long as they make it to the playoffs...

I understand how you girls feel. But I knew the OLD Lamar, The REAL Lamar!!! He was a great player for the Lakers, a good guy and a team player!! And I will admit, I am a fan of the Kardashian's reality shows, as I've told you before. I have followed Lamar and Khloe's marrige , they really are/were in love!!! Well IDK, I think being in the spotlight did get to him, and being traded, he couldn't handle it!! And it seemed deeper than him just being a baby about the trade, he REALLY seemed troubled!!! I watched the Khloe and Lamar show, she was very supportaive , trying to really make a life in Dallas, finding a home. Lamar just was TOTALLY a different person. Like he lost it!! Very sad. I believe he really had a slight nervous breakdown or something!! :'(Like I said, I knew him as a Laker, he was a solid guy and from seeing him on the Kardashian show, he really seemed like a really good/cool guy, recently he is like a nervous shell of himself, I think he really maybe is having issues or is going through a depression or breakdown or something!! Very sad!!!

Very sad!!! Well, on a personal level I feel sorry for Lamar. As I said before, I didn't know he had that kind of trouble past summer with his cousin passing away etc. And maybe he is a great person. Still I'm sad that he couldn't meet the expectations and that he couldn't support the Mavs the way I wish he would've done. I think it's best he's going to sort himself out and is taken from the roster, but the Mavs have lost so much time now to form a real great team. Like the kind of team we've seen last season. (And yes, I admit it, I was sad to see Tyson go. ) I can't really describe it, but to me it looks like as if the Mavs are still trying to create the team spirit and I'm still waiting for the spark. I love the guys dearly and I hope they gain their momentum back.

Tonight the Hornets play the Rockets in about 25 minutes and we all need to cheer for the Hornets to win, because if the Rockets lose then Dirk and the Mavericks will clinch the 7th spot for the play offs. So... GO HORNETS!!

Okay had to go into overtime. It is still tied at 89 with 2:13 left. YES! The Hornets just scored, they're up 91 - 89 and are at the foul line. MADE IT! 92 - 89. Time out. Yes! 94- 89. HOT DAMN HORNETS STOLE THE BALL AND GOT 2 MORE POINTS! 96 -89.Tom Benson, the new owner, is 85 and enjoying himself at courtside. Another Rockets time out. 1:32 left in overtime. GO HORNETS! Rockets missed a 3 pointer and a whistle was blown but it's the Hornets ball. Another whistle, oh it was a Hornets turnover and another whistle. I swear in this last minute that's left the whistle is getting more of a workout than the players.Rockets at the free throw and just made a basket and the Hornets just called a time out. 96 - 90 Hornets. Hornets better be careful or Tom Benson is going to be on the court leading a cheer. Hornets have 98. Carl Landry is doing good. Goodness Kevin McHale looks almost as old as Tom Benson. Free throw line has been kind to the Hornets, 99 - 92.Another offensive foul against the Rockets. Luis Scola does not look happy, but so what. I swear the Hornets are living at the free throw line they make one and miss one, which is why they have 101 points. And another foul by the Rockets and the Hornets are at their favorite place.Made both free throws 103 - 95 and:12.4 seconds left. Good way to end the season. Rockets just scored two but the Hornets got fouled again. And that's it Hornets 105 Rockets 99. So I do believe this gets the Mavs the 7th spot in the playoffs. YIPPEE!!

I thought the Hornets win sealed the Mavericks spot in the playoffs, but the Mavs still need to beat Golden State tomorrow night.

So glad about the Hornets and PLEASE, PLEASE hope Mavericks beat the Warriors!! They HAVE to make playoffs! I can't bear to not see Dirk anymore for the season! On Saturday they have an ESPN game on playing the Chicago Bulls. I get to see Dirk AND drink beer being it's on Saturday. I wouldn't know what to think if Dirk and the Mavs didn't make the playoffs. Well, other than it's all Mark Cuban's fault for not giving J.J. Barea what he wanted, because I think Tyson Chandler and Caron Butler just wanted out of Dallas. On the subject of the playoffs here is a piece about the Mavs in an article called "The Biggest Surprise for Every NBA Team This Season": Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks have been in the playoffs every year since 2001.Now just weeks away from the end of the season the Mavericks have yet to clinch a playoff spot. Now granted, it's not very likely they are going to go home early, but this is the defending a NBA champion struggling to get into the postseason. The only time a defending champ has failed to make it to the playoffs was the post- Jordan Bulls, who really don't count. Whether they make it or not, the Mavs struggles this year are a bit of a surprise. bleacherreport.com/articles/1152019-the-biggest-surprise-for-every-nba-team-this-season/page/7
